Meet Your Spanish Teacher

In 2012, I packed my bag and moved to Cuenca, Ecuador to start student teaching. Before moving to Ecuador, I had taken 10 years worth of Spanish classes. I started taking classes in sixth grade at my middle school and in university decided to minor in the language. I still remember arriving at my host family’s home, wide eyed and ever so nervous. My host mom opened the door and her arms to me, wrapping me in the biggest hug and saying words I was not prepared to comprehend. My Spanish was good, but it surely wasn’t good enough to connect with my new family members on a deeper level. Ask me a yes or no question, and I was prepared to answer it with a “sí” or “no”. Ask me a question that elicited more than that, and we were all in for a treat.

I knew that after two months of living in Cuenca, my Spanish was sure to improve. What I wasn’t prepared for was to fall so in love with the culture, people, and language that I wouldn’t want to leave! I ended up coming back to the US to finish my degree in Education, and within a month of graduation was back in Cuenca, finishing out the school year as the school’s full time science and English teacher. After that, I moved to Pereira, Colombia where I taught 3rd grade at a bilingual school for the next three years. My Spanish continued to improve and my love for the language and latin culture grew with it.

In 2021, Sing Play Learn Spanish was born with the intention of teaching young kids Spanish. I wanted to create something that would engage young learners and get them excited about the language and the world around them. No more getting lectured from a chalkboard. Instead, we sing, we play, we learn Spanish.

About Sing Play Learn Spanish

These Sing Play Learn Spanish lessons are just over 25 minutes long and are designed to be taken twice a week. I find that meeting twice a week as opposed to just once, greatly helps the students to retain the vocabulary and sentence frames that we are focusing on. Each unit focuses on a new set of vocabulary words, a verb, and specific sentence frames. In addition to the live classes we have together, students will also receive an information sheet with the vocabulary words, sentence frames, and a section where I give you tips and ideas on how to practice at home. Students will also get a copy of all of the songs from that unit and an activity sheet that contains a crossword puzzle and word search! There are normally 6 classes per unit, so each unit tends to last three weeks. In Unit 1, students will learn how to use complete sentences to identify objects by color. After that we will learn about animals, body parts, family members, and so much more! Bit by bit students will be introduced to more challenging material and their conversational skills will become stronger and stronger.

Sample Lesson Outline

  • Warm Up Song: Students will begin the lesson by practicing the unit warm up song which focuses on a common conversational phrase throughout the unit.

  • Lesson Vocabulary Song: Students will learn a new song each week as an additional way to practice and learn the lesson's vocabulary words.

  • Vocabulary Introduction: Students will use movement, play games, and learn strategies to practice and retain the new vocabulary words.

  • Conversational Practice: Students will learn how to ask and answer questions in complete sentences using the unit's vocabulary words. We will focus on a specific sentence frame during each unit and build on those sentence frames in the following lessons.

  • Review: Students will review what they have learned by playing a game or answering questions. When time allows, we review content from previous lessons and practice reading and writing skills.

  • Goodbye Song: Students will wrap up the lesson by learning multiple different ways to say goodbye in Spanish.
